Abstract

874,953. Making turbine blades; destructive cores. WIGGIN & CO. Ltd., HENRY. May 8, 1957 [May 8, 1956], No. 14275/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of leaching filler from a hole in an alloy article by an acid solution that attacks the filler exclusively or preferentially comprises inserting in the hole one or more wires which are substantially unattached by the acid during the process. A single wire may be inserted after some filler has been leached out to form a hole, and may be allowed to move freely so that it descends the hole under gravity as the filler is leached out, or it may be mechanically agitated. Preferably the wire or each wire is a core in the filler. A filler with one or more cores may he made by drilling a billet of filler material and inserting in the drilled billet one or more acid-resisting cores. The, whole may then be converted to rod and cut to the required length for insertion in a drilled hole in a billet from which a turbine blade or other article is to be formed. When a single wire is incorporated in a filler rod it is, preferably disposed asymmetrically; best results are obtained when more than one core is inserted in a billet of filler material, but the total area of core should not exceed 25% of that of the billet. The filler for turbine blades of nickel-chromiumcobalt alloy may be mild steel or 88% iron, 10% manganese, 2% titanium alloy. The core wires may be of a nickel base alloy containing about 15% chromium and 8% iron. Specifications 763,115 and 765,119 are referred to.
