Abstract

806,479. Making turbine blades; destructible cones. WIGGIN & CO. Ltd., H. Aug. 22, 1957 [Sept. 12, 1956], No. 27907/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). An iron-containing filler is removed from a metal article by first acid etching the article for a short time using an aqueous acidic solution which attacks both the article and the filler and then leaching the filler in a solution which attacks the filler solely or preferentially. The invention is concerned in particular with the production of turbine blades having cooling passages by the extrusion of filled billets made from nickel-chromium or nickel-chromiumcobalt base alloys. The filler may be of mild steel, iron-manganese-titanium alloys or sintered composition of iron and magnesia. The short time etching is stated to remove the oxide layer which forms on the filler during working; it is performed by immersing the article in a solution of equal parts of hydrochloric acid and water at boiling point, or at room temperature when combined with an electrolytic treatment. The final leaching is effected by an aqueous solution containing 25 per cent nitric acid and 1 per cent hydrochloric acid. Specific examples are given. Specifications 763,115, [Group II], and 765,199 are referred to.
