Abstract

The invention comprises vat dyestuffs which are free from triazine rings and contain not more than 8 carbocyclic rings fused together and at least one sulphonic acid amide group whose nitrogen atom bears an aliphatic chain having at least 4 carbon atoms between the amide nitrogen and a sulphuric acid semi-ester group. The vat dyes include acylamino anthraquinones and dyes of the anthraquinone series containing condensed carbocyclic or heterocyclic rings or more than one anthraquinone unit and those of the perylene tetracarboxylic acid, naphthalene tetracarboxylic acid, pyrene-quinono, benzoquinono, naphthoquinone and indigo series. The dyes are made by amidating a sulphochloride of a vat dye free from triazine rings and containing not more than 8 carbocyclic rings fused together with an aliphatic amine containing at least four carbon atoms between the amino nitrogen and a sulphato group, esterifying with a sulphating agent a corresponding vat dye containing a hydroxyl group instead of a sulphato group, or reacting an appropriate vat dye sulphonic acid alkylamide containing a halogen atom or a sulphonyloxy or sulphato group in the alkyl group with a sulphato alkylamine to form a sulphatoalkylaminoalkylamide. Examples are given. The dyes vat-dye or print textiles of natural or regenerated cellulose. Specifications 887,588 and 923,740 are referred to.
