Abstract

The invention comprises brown vat dyestuffs of the formula: <FORM:0858586/IV (c)/1> where Ac is the acedianthrone residue in which the -NH- group occupies the same position as the nitro group in the nitroacedianthrone obtained by mononitration of acedianthrone, Ar is an anthraquinone or benzanthrone residue and Ar1 is the same as Ac or is an anthraquinone residue, and the carbazoles therefrom. The dyestuffs are made by reacting about 1 mol of a dihalogen anthraquinone or a dihalogen benzanthrone with 2 mols of monoaminoacedianthrone or with 1 mol of monoaminoacedianthrone and 1 mol of a monoaminoanthraquinone, the amino group of the acedianthrone occupying the same position as the nitro group in the nitroacedianthrone obtained by the mononitration of acedianthrone and treating the resulting anthrimide, if desired, with a carbazolising agent. The dyes colour natural and regenerated cellulose and may be used as pigments.
