Abstract

The invention comprises vat dyestuffs of the formula: <FORM:0861758/IV(c)/1> where Ac is an acedianthrone residue in which the NH-groups occupy the same position as the bromine atoms in the mono- or di-bromacedianthrone obtained by bromination of an acedianthrone. Aq is an anthraquinone radical free from carbocyclic five-membered rings and m and n are each 1 or 2 and m+n is at most 3, and a process for making them by condensing a mono-bromacedianthrone obtained by brominating an acedianthrone with a mono- or diaminoanthraquinone or a dibromacedianthrone obtained by brominating an acedianthrone with a monoamino-anthraquinone, which aminoanthraquinones are free from carbocyclic five-membered rings, in such a manner that for one bromine atom of the acedianthrone one amino group reacts. The resulting anthrimides may be treated with a carbazolizing agent. The aminoanthraquinones which may be used include diamino dianthrimidecarbazole and aminodibenzanthrone. The anthrimides and the carbazoles obtained therefrom colour natural and regenerated cellulose brown and grey shades and can be used as pigments.
