Abstract

The invention comprises vat dyestuffs of the formula:-A1-X-A2 wherein A1 and A2 are anthraquinonyl radicals or anthraquinone radicals containing a heterocyclic ring fused thereto in such a manner that both keto groups of the anthraquinone nucleus are still present, of which radicals at least one contains a hexahydrobenzoylamino group which may be nuclearly substituted, and X is a direct bond or an aromatic or heterocyclic radical. The dyestuffs are made by acylation of the appropriate amino anthraquinone compounds or, to obtain dyestuffs of the above formula where X is an aromatic radical linked to A1 and A2 via -CONH-or -NH- groups, by reacting an aromatic compound containing two exchangeable halogen atoms with an appropriate amino anthraquinone or anthraquinones containing the desired hexahydrobenzoylamino p group or groups. The dyestuffs dye or print fibres of natural or regenerated cellulose and may be used as pigments. 1-Amino-4-hexahydrobenzoylaminoanthraquinone is made by acylating leuco-1 : 4-diaminoanthraquinone in the presence of nitrobenzene and diethylaniline with hexahydrobenzoyl chloride. 1-Amino-5-hexahydrobenzoylaminoanthraquinone is made by monoacylating 1 : 5-diaminoanthraquinone or by reacting 1-chloro-5-aminoanthraquinone with para-toluene sulphonamide, acylating the product with hexahydrobenzoyl chloride, and hydrolysing with sulphuric acid.
