Abstract

Dyes are made by acylating an alkaline condensation product of 1-(Bz.1-benzanthronylamino)-4- or 5- or 8-aminoanthraquinone which contains in the 5- or 6- or 7- or 8- position of the benzanthrone nucleus the residue of a diamine of the anthraquinone series. Such initial materials are obtained by condensing Bz.1.5 (or 6 or 7 or 8) dihalogen benzanthrones with two molecular proportions of a diamino anthraquinone and then subjecting the product to the action of an alkaline condensing agent, which, if a monoacyl diamine has been used, splits off the acyl group. Compounds containing the radicals of two different diamines may be prepared. In examples, the substance obtained by treating with alcoholic caustic potash the condensation product from Bz.1.6-dibromobenzanthrone with two molecular proportions of either 1.5-diaminoanthraquinone or of 1-amino-5-benzoylaminoanthraquinone (the benzoyl group being split off), and which itself dyes cotton grey shades not fast to chlorine, is treated with (1) benzoyl chloride (olive-brown shades on cotton) or benzoic anhydride or halogenated benzoyl chlorides, (2) acetic anhydride (olive-grey shades), (3) 1-nitro-anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid chloride (black shades) or 1-aminoanthraquinone -2-carboxylic chloride (violet shades). The above initial substance may be replaced by compounds containing an amino group in the 4- or 8-position of the aminoanthraquinone residue which is attached to the 6- or 7- or 8-position of the benzanthrone radicle.
