Abstract

Vat dyes are made by treating with acylating agents the alkaline condensation products of such 1-(Bz.1-benzanthronyl-amino)-4- or -5-or -8- aminoanthraquinones as contain in the 5- or 6- or 7- or 8- position of the benzanthrone nucleus the residue of a further amine of the anthraquinone series. In examples, (1) the condensation product of the formula <FORM:0470529/IV/1> (obtained by treating with caustic alkali the product obtainable by consecutive condensation of Bz.1-6-dibromobenzanthrone with one mol. of 1-amino-5-benzoylaminoanthraquinone and 1 mol. of 1-aminoanthraquinone, the benzoyl group being split off by the caustic alkali) or the corresponding body containing in the 6-position of the benzanthrone nucleus the residue of 2-aminoanthraquinone or of 6-chloro-6-aminoanthraquinone is treated with benzoyl chloride or a halogenated derivative thereof or with anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid chloride; (2) the product of the above formula but containing the NH2 group in the 4- or 8- position of the anthraquinone residue is treated with benzoyl chloride; (3) and (4) the product of the above formula is treated respectively with acetic anhydride, and with 1-nitroanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid chloride.
