Abstract

An amino-isothiazolanthrone or an amino-anthra-di-isothiazole is treated with an acylating agent of which the acyl group is the residue of an anthraquinone carboxylic acid which does not contain a nitrogenous group in the heteronucleus (i.e. the ring not containing the carboxyl group). A product specified is 4-(1<1>-anthraquinonoyl)-amino-1.9-isothiazolanthrone. Solvents, acid binding agents, or catalysts may be used, in an open vessel or under pressure. The products may be converted into leuco-derivatives. The products are intermediates or dyes which produce fast, strong dyeings and printings on vegetable fibres. In examples, 5-amino-1.9-isothiazolanthrone is condensed with (1) anthraquinone-2 (or 1)-carboxylic acid chloride; (2) 1-chloroanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid chloride; (3) 1-amino (or benzoylamino) anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid chloride; (4) 4.8-diamino-1.9.5.-10-anthra-diisothiazole is condensed with anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid chloride; (5) 4 - amino - 1.9 - isothiazolanthrone is condensed with 1-aminoanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid chloride; (6) anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid chloride may be condensed with 4 (or 8 or 6)-amino-1.9-isothiazolanthrone, or 5-amino-8-methoxy- or 5-amino-8-chloro-1.9-isothiazolanthrone. Two examples are given of the dyeing of cotton yellow shades using the dyestuff produced in (1) above. 4.8 - Diamino - 1.9.5.10 - anthra-di-isothiazole is prepared by sulphonating 1.5-diaminoanthraquinone with fuming sulphuric acid in presence of boric acid, and heating the sodium salt of the 1.5-diaminoanthraquinone-4.8-disulphonic acid so obtained with sodium sulphide, sulphur and ammonia for 10 hours at 100 DEG C. The Provisional Specification refers to treating the products with sulphuric acid, an aldehyde such as formaldehyde or a halogenating agent to yield further valuable products.
