Abstract

Benzanthrone derivatives; dibenzpyrenequinones.-Alkali-soluble condensation products, presumably o-carboxyphenylbenzanthrones, are obtained by heating benzanthrone with an o-halogenobenzoic acid or a salt thereof in the presence of an alkaline condensing agent. The products may be used as dyestuffs, for example as pigments or lakes, or they may be converted into vat dyes of the dibenz-pyrenequinone series, dyeing cotton in yellow to orange shades, by treating with ring-closing agents, such as sulphuric acid or aluminium chloride. In examples, sodium o-chlorbenzoate and o-brombenzoic acid are condensed with benzanthrone in the presence of caustic potash, and the products treated with concentrated sulphuric acid, or with phosphorus pentoxide in nitrobenzene, to effect closure of the ring.
