Dec. 8, 1928. 1 : 9 - Anthrathiazole-2-carboxylic chloride is made by heating 1 - chloranthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid with alkaline polysulphide and ammonia, and converting the resulting 1 : 9- anthrathiazole-2-carboxylic acid into the chloride, for example by means of thionyl chloride or phosphorus pentachloride. An example is given. Vat dyes, dyeing in yellow to orange shades, are obtained by condensing the above 1 : 9-anthrathiazole - 2 - carboxylic chloride with aminoanthraquinones or their derivatives, including mercapto, benzoylamino, and halogen derivatives. The condensation may be effected by heating in nitrobenzene. In examples, the chloride is condensed with 1- and 2-aminoanthraquinones, monobenzoyl- 1 : 5-diaminoanthraquinone, 1 - amino - 6 - chloranthraquinone, and 1-mercapto-2-aminoanthraquinone in molecular proportions, and with 1 : 4- and 1 : 5-diaminoanthraquinones, one molecular proportion of the latter being condensed with two molecular proportions of the chloride. In a further example, the chloride is condensed with 1 : 5- diaminoanthraquinone in molecular proportions and the product is benzoylated by treating with benzoyl chloride.
