Abstract

The invention comprises leuco sulphuric acid esters of vat dyestuffs of the anthraquinone series which contain a reactive substituent, i.e. a substituent capable of entering into chemical combination with cellulose. Reactive substituents described include chlorine or bromine atoms attached to triazine or pyrimidine rings, b -sulphato-ethyl and b -chlorethyl groups attached via aminosulphonyl, sulphone or amino groups, b - chloropropionylamino, chloracetylamino, acryloylamino, chloracryloylamino and vinyl sulphone groups. The dyes are made by condensing a leuco sulphuric acid ester of an anthraquinone vat dyestuff containing an amino group, or of an amino-anthraquinone which becomes a vat dyestuff on acylation, with an acylating agent containing a reactive substituent in addition to the acylating group. When the acylating agent contains a plurality of acylating groups the product may be further reacted with a mono- or diamine. Thus a leuco sulphuric acid ester of an amino-anthraquinone is reacted with chloropropionyl chloride, chloracetyl chloride, acryloyl chloride or chloracrylol chloride and di- or trihalotriazines and tetrachloropyrimidine are reacted with leuco sulphuric acid esters of mono- or diamino-anthraquinones (including aminodibenzanthrone) and in certain cases also with vattable or non-vattable amines of dyestuff or non-dyestuff character such as an amino substituted copper phthalocyanine sulphonic acid. The leucosulphuric acid ester of aminodibenzanthrone is made by reducing aminodibenzanthrone with zinc dust in the presence of the sulphur trioxide adduct of dimethylformamide in dimethylformamide containing methylamine and sodium b -naphthalene-sulphonate at 0-8 DEG C.ALSO:Natural or regenerated cellulose textile materials are dyed and printed using lenco sulphuric acid esters of vat dyestuffs of the anthraguinone series which contain a substituent capable of entering into chemical combination with cellulose. The dyes are applied by thermofixation, reductive pad-steaming, single-bath steaming, a cold-storage method, printing (by steaming), single-bath steaming without intermediate drying, an exhaustion method using a reducing agent, infra-red fixation, an exhaustion method without using a reducing agent and a printing method with infra-red treatment. Details of these methods are given. The esters also dye wool and polyamide fibres.
