Abstract

The invention comprises anthraquinone dyes of the formula <FORM:0985848/C4-C5/1> wherein one of Y1 and Y2 is -OH and the other is -NO2, -NH2 or an alkylamino or hydroxyalkylamino group, A and B are each phenylene which may be substituted but not by water-solubilizing substituents which dissociate acid in water, Z is -O- or -S-, R is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and n is 1 or 2. The dyes are made by reacting at 100 DEG to 200 DEG C. an anthraquinone of the formula <FORM:0985848/C4-C5/2> wherein one of Y11 and Y12 is -OH and the other is -NO2, with an amine of the formula NH2-[-A-Z-B-]-(OR)n wherein A, B, Z, n and R are as above, and then reducing the nitro group to amino or converting it to alkylamino or hydroxyalkylamino by heating with an alkylamine or hydroxyalkylamine. The dyes dye cellulose ester, aromatic polyester and synthetic polyamide textile materials from aqueous dispersion in blue shades.
