Abstract

The invention comprises vat dyes which contain at least one group of the formula <FORM:0927278/IV(a)/1> where A is a substituted or unsubstituted alkylene radical in which -OX is beta to the nitrogen atom, R is alkyl or -AOX and X is an inorganic acyl residue imparting solubility in water, such as a sulphuric acid or phosphoric acid residue. The vat dyes may be anthraquinone vat dyes such as anthraquinones containing fused carbocyclic or heterocyclic rings and acylamino anthraquinones containing two anthraquinone nuclei, and vat dyes of the perylene tetracarboxylic acid diimide, naphthalene tetracarboxylic acid diimide, pyrenequinone, naphthoquinone, indigo or thioindigo series. The dyes are made by acylating vat dyes containing at least one <FORM:0927278/IV(a)/2> group of by condensing a vat dye sulphohalide with an amine of the formula <FORM:0927278/IV(a)/3> The dyes dye and print textile materials of natural or regenerated cellulose by vat dyeing or printing methods. Examples are given.
