Abstract

The invention comprises dibenzanthrone and isodibenzanthrone vat dyestuffs which are free from acid groups imparting solubility in water and contain at least one sulphonamide group directly attached to the dibenzanthrone or isodibenzanthrone nucleus via the -SO2- group and which is derived from a secondary amine. The dyes are made by condensing a dibenzanthrone or isodibenzanthrone sulphonic acid halide with a secondary amine. Amines specified are dimethylamine, monomethylaminoethanol, diethanolamine, di-b -hydroxypropylamine, N-methyl-aniline, N-ethylaniline and amines of the formula <FORM:0927019/IV(a)/1> where X is a direct bond or an oxygen or sulphur atom or is -SO2-, -N(CH3)-, -CH2- or -CH2(CH3)-. The dyes dye and print cellulose fibres in blue to violet shades.
