[Also in Divisions B6 and B8] A wooden plug 1 suitable for inserting in the ends of core tubes 9 of paper rolls is formed with a radial slit 8 which opens and closes with changes in atmospheric conditions so that the external diameter of the plug does not change substantially. The plug has an axial hole 2 with which the slit 8 communicates. The end of the plug is cylindrical in shape and provided with V- grooves 6 having one side perpendicular to the plug axis so as to grip the tube 9. The remainder 7 of the plug is of decreasing diameter. The axis of the plug may be parallel to the wood grain, and the annual rings may be concentric or eccentric with relation to the periphery.
