Abstract

763,413. Collapsible spindles. Mc- DOUGALL, A. E., and McDOUGALL, V. R. May 2, 1955 [Oct. 26, 1954], No. 30810/54. Class 100(1) A collapsible spindle for connecting the tubular core 15 of a paper roll to a rotary spindle 13a of a roll spider 13 includes an expansible tube-engaging member 14 carried by a body 12 provided with driving means and a socket to receive the spindle 13a, the member 14 being adapted to fit within the core 15 when contracted, but being firmly engaged therein and attached to the body when expanded. As shown, the member 14 is a rubber cylinder interposed between a plate 17 secured to the body 12, and an end plate 20 having a tapped bore 20a. A screw 16 engages the bore 20a, while rods 19, secured to the plate 17, guide the plate 20 axially. Actuation of the screw, by a box spanner applied to its head 16a compresses or releases the cylinder 14, thus causing radial expansion or contraction thereof. When the screw 16 is actuated to compress the cylinder 14, the core 15 is forced axially into engagement with a tapered portion 12b and a key 12c on the body, the key 12c engaging a keyway in the core.
