Abstract
1395009 Making collapsible tubes; tubeexpanders RAY WARNER & SON (ENGS) Ltd 23 June 1972 [26 May 1971] 17220/71 Headings B3A and B3J An expanding mandrel for forming collapsible toothpaste &c. tubes comprises a colletlike member expansible to frusto-conical form by a tapering pin. In Fig. 1 the collet 2 is retained against a spring-pressed washer 6 in a housing 1 by a nut 5. The operating pin 3 is hollow for compressed-air stripping of the work and is advanced, against the influence of a return spring 11, as by a pneumatic ram. A radial stop-and-guide pin 14 on the tapering pin 3 engages a slot in the housing 1. Surrounding the collet is a rubber or plastics sleeve 4 or a coil spring, Fig. 3 (not shown), which may impress a helical line in the tube 10. A hollow screw 13 in the end of the pin 3 engages a ball 15 for expanding the free end of the collet thus freeing the pin 3 for easy retraction. In other forms the housing may include a separate colletmounting end (Fig. 4) and the sleeve may be gripped by radial pins (20, Fig. 5); a doubleacting ram may operate pin 3.
