Abstract

A mix suitable for use in the production of road foundations is prepared by saturating a limestone aggregate with an alkaline solution of sodium carbonate in an amount sufficient to act as a dispersing agent for bitumen and also to effect a natural hardening and setting of the limestone aggregate, mixing thoroughly the aggregate and the solution, and then adding a straight run bitumen (i.e. a bitumen substantially free from light or medium oils), previously brought to liquid state by heating, and further mixing said components to effect complete distribution or dispersion of the bitumen in the aggregate.
