Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare a harmless and stable additive for cosmetics, having excellent gelling characteristics, by adding specific amounts of a montmorillonite clay mineral modified with an organic compound and a surfactant/water liquid crystal to an organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:The viscosity of an organic solvent such as a low-boiling hydrocarbon containing a thickner comprising a montmorillonite clay mineral modified with a polar organic compound, is remarkably increased without using a harmful polar organic compound such as acetone, etc., by adding 10-200% of a surfactant/ water liquid crystal to the solvent. The surfactant and the water may be added to the solvent separately in a ratio to form a liquid crystal having a lamellar structure; however, when the organic solvent has adverse effect to the stability of the liquid crystal, the surfactant and water is mixed together to form a liquid crystal before added to the solvent.
