Abstract

A cement similar to Portland cement is made by separately preheating limestone to about 900-1200 DEG C. and clay to about 600-900 DEG C., mixing the two together, finely grinding, and introducing with agitation a determined amount of water or steam to activate chemically the silica. A suitable amount of water is 40 per cent by weight of the lime. In an example 80 parts by weight of clay are heated to 800 DEG C. and 20 parts of limestone are heated to 900-1100 DEG C. The two ingredients are mixed, ground to cement fineness and agitated with the addition of 8 per cent of water. The lime may be replaced by other alkaline-earth oxides and the clay by other substances containing silica such as shale, volcanic tuff and furnace slag, the treating temperatures being the same as for limestone and clay.
