Abstract

In a process for coating a metallic surface, the surface is rapidly heated in air to 1300-1800 DEG F. and a nickel-chromium alloy sprayed thereon, the coated surface being then heated to 1800-2250 DEG F. in order to interdiffuse and to alloy the coating with the substrate. The object may subsequently be heated to 300-1400 DEG F., a coating of aluminium applied by spraying or hot-dipping, and a final heat-treatment effected at 1500-2100 DEG F. The nickel-chromium alloy consists of Ni 70-97%, Cr 3-30%, with other constituents not exceeding 10% in all. The process is applied to the protection of ferrous-base and nickel-base exhaust valves of internal combustion engines.
