Abstract

812,659. Coating with aluminium; alloys. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 26, 1957 [Aug. 13, 1956], No. 23731/57. Classes 82(1) and 82(2) At least part of a metal article (e.g. a poppet valve for an I.C. engine) is preheated (e.g. to a temperature of 200‹-600‹F.) by induction heating, the heated part is sprayed with molten Al (or an alloy containing at least 80 per cent Al), and the coated part is then heated (e.g. to a temperature of 1425‹- 1625‹F.) by induction heating so as to cause diffusion of the Al into the metal of the article to a depth not greater than 0.0015 inches (preferably 0.00005-0.0015 inches). The thickness of the coated layer is preferably not greater than 0.004 inches, and during the initial and final heatings the article may be rotated (e.g. at 400- 600 r.p.m.). As shown, a conveyer rotates and simultaneously moves a row of poppet valves 10 past an induction preheater 30, an oxy-acetylene spray gun 35 for Al wire 36, and an induction heater 32. The heaters 30, 32 preferably operate at 9,600-45,000 cycles per second, and they comprise bar-type coils having portions 34, 40 above the heads of the valves and a pair of portions 37, 42 below the heads of the valves and on opposite sides of the valve stems. The valves may be of the following compositions in percentages by weight:
