A liquid fuel combustion apparatus comprises a combustion chamber 4 to which air is supplied by a blower (not shown) and into which liquid fuel is sprayed by an atomizer, and an electric filament igniter 1 mounted in the combustion chamber and shielded by a Z-shaped cover 10 having a wick 11. The wick is in the form of a cord or tape and is drawn through holes in the cover. Further holes in the cover supply air to the filament.
