In a pipe wrench comprising at least one pair of rotatable cams 1, 2 mounted on a common pivot 3, each cam having an eccentric arcuate surface with a radius which progressively increases in one direction, the cam surfaces are shaped and arranged in such a way that the angle between the line connecting the point at which the surface of the gripped body A contacts one cam surface to the corresponding pivot centre 3 and the perpendicular to the body surface which passes through the centre of the pivot is equal to the angle between the line connecting the point at which the body surface contacts the other cam surface to the pivot centre 3 and the perpendicular to the body surface A which passes through the pivot centre 3. As shown, the lower part 2d of the upper cam lies between the forked parts on the handle 1c of the lower cam and is hinged by the pivot pin 3. The part 2d has a longitudinal groove 4 in which the pin 3 can slide and can be adjusted by a push bolt 5 screwed into the lower end of the part 2d in order to adjust the distance between the cam surfaces 1, 2. The gripping effect of the cams on the body A is equivalent to that of wedges pushed between each cam surface and the body.
