Abstract
944,077. Ornamenting. STOREY BROS. & CO. Ltd. July 3, 1962 [April 6, 1961], No. 12397/61. Heading B6G. [Also in Division B5] A process for the manufacture of tiles of the kind having one face and the sides consisting of a thin skin of synthetic thermoplastic material applied to the surface of a lightweight body such as a foamed plastic, foamed rubber or cork, includes the step of pre-forming the skin in a mould from a sheet of synthetic thermoplastic material, which has been heated to render it soft and pliable, by drawing it into the mould by suction to line the mould and produce an open-topped cavity for the reception of the tile body. The mould is formed with ribs 12 forming rectangular cavities 13, and with suction holes 11. The sheet 16 is heated by a radiant heater 18. The tile bodies are inserted into the cavities before or after removing the pre-formed skin from the mould. The final assembly is cut into individual tiles or groups of tiles. The sheet is coated on its upper surface with a pressure-sensitive adhesive not affected by the heat, or with a heat-sensitive adhesive, before or after being sucked into the mould. The tile bodies may be of polystyrene. The skin may be of polyvinyl chloride.
