Abstract

1,033,540. Injection moulding. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 27, 1964 [Nov. 4, 1961; Dec. 24, 1963], Nos. 43437/63 and 50886/63. Heading B5A. In a process for injection moulding a shaped body on to a surface of a member the moulding composition is a vinyl chloride polymer and the surface is first coated with a plasticized vinyl chloride polymer or copolymer, e.g. a latex or plastisol. The coating composition contains from 30-150 parts by weight of plasticizer to each 100 parts of polymer or copolymer, and is applied hot or cold to the surface by spreading or by moulding. The moulding composition may contain a blowing agent. Where the surface to be coated is smooth it is roughened before being coated. The gelling of the coating may be completed during the moulding. The invention is described as applied to a shoe soling process, the coating being applied to an upper on a last which closes a mould cavity into which the moulding composition is injected. The apparatus may include a plurality of lasts. If the coating layer is applied by moulding the mould cavity has a movable wall so that the cavity is small during the coating and is enlarged before or during the moulding. The invention is also described as applied to the forming of a laminate comprising a chrome tanned leather substrate to which a latex coating is applied before injection moulding a layer of the moulding composition thereon.
