Abstract
1,243,653. Boots &c. T. FUKUOKA. 28 Oct., 1968 [8 Nov., 1967; 31 Dec., 1967], No. 51006/68. Heading A3B. An article of footwear consists of a sole 2 and upper 1 which are formed as an integral one piece moulding of thermoplastic synthetic resin having a foamed interior surrounded by a non-foamed outer layer, the upper 1 having a separately formed cover part 6 bonded to it. In a first embodiment (Figs. 1, 3) the article is a sandal and the cover layer may be bonded to the outside of the upper 1 as shown or to the inside or both sides of the upper 1. In a second embodiment (Fig. 11) not shown the article is in the form of a boot having a sole (12) and upper (11) formed of the thermoplastic resin, the upper having a cover layer (16). In both embodiments the cover layer 6 may be bonded to the upper 1, the edges of the layer 6 being located in undercut recesses 7 in enlarged portions 5 of the upper 1. Alternatively the cover layer 6 may be placed in an injection mould, the layer 6 being bonded to the upper during moulding. The article is made by injecting the thermoplastic resin, together with a blowing agent, into a mould cavity in a hot fluid condition and under sufficient pressure to prevent foaming. The resin solidifies where it contacts the mould walls to form the non-foamed outer layer and the mould cavity is then enlarged to allow the central uncooled mass of resin to expand to form the foamed interior. The cover layer 6 may be synthetic resin sheet, woven, non-woven or knitted cloth, natural or imiitation leather or fur, and may have varied designs and/or multicoloured designs on its outer surface. Suitable thermoplastic synthetic resins are polymers and copolymers of styrene and styrene derivatives, copolymers of vinylidene chloride, polymers and copolymers of methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and other derivaties of acrylic acid, polymers and copolymers of vinyl acetate and vinyl butyral and various cellulose derivatives including cellulose nitrate or acetate. The foot contacting surface of the sole may also be provided with a cover layer (not shown).
