Abstract

1,227,208. Injection moulding footwear. T. FUKUOKA. 29 Nov., 1968, No. 56723/68. Heading B5A. [Also in Division A3] A sandal consists of a band member 1 and a sole member 2 which are integrally and simultaneously moulded from thermoplastic resin in such a way as to form a solid outer layer 4 and a foamed interior 3. The upper surface 2A of the sole 2 is shaped to conform to the wearer's foot and the upper and/or lower surface of the sole 2 is covered with a layer 5 of hard thermoplastic material. The cover layer 5 is preformed from a layer 5<SP>1</SP> which is held by holders 10 (Fig. 3) beneath heaters 7 and is then moved downwardly into contact with a vacuum forming mould 8. The edges a of the sheet are then cut off and the layer 5 is then placed in the mould used to form the sandal. Thermoplastic material together with a blowing agent is then injected into the mould at a temperature sufficient to render the material fluid and above the foaming temperature but at a pressure sufficient to restrain foaming. When the material contacts the cooled mould surface it forms the solid outer layer 4 and the mould cavity is then enlarged so that the uncooled central mass foams to form the foamed interior 3. Suitable materials for the sandal are polystyrene; polymers and copolymers of a-methyl styrene, ar-methyl styrene or vinyltoluene, mono- and di-chlorostyrene; copolymers of vinylidene chloride; polymers and copolymers of methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and other derivatives of acrylic acid; polymers and copolymers of vinyl acetate and vinyl butyral; and cellulose derivatives such as cellulose nitrate or acetate. Suitable blowing agents are dichlorodifluoromethane, carbon dioxide, pentane and other low boiling hydrocarbons or heat sensitive gas generating agents. In a modification (not shown) a lower sole member having an integral band and hard cover layer on the tread surface is combined with an upper sole member having a hard cover layer on its upper surface to form the completed sandal.
