Abstract

1,196,996. Boots &c. T. FUKUOKA. 20 July, 1968, No. 34753/68. Heading A3B. A sandal comprises a sole member 2 and a band member 1 which are integrally and simultaneously molded of synthetic resin and which have a foamed interior portion 3 and a solid outer layer 10. The upper surface of the sole member 2 is shaped to conform to the sole of the wearer's foot and has a transverse ridge 11, a shallow concave depression 4 and a deeper concave depression 5. The sandal is made by injecting the synthetic resin, containing a blowing agent, in a hot fluid condition into a mould under sufficient pressure to prevent foaming. The mould is cooled so that the solid outer layer 10 is formed and has a mould cavity which can be enlarged to relieve the pressure of the synthetic resin thus allowing the blowing agent to form the foamed interior portion 3. Suitable synthetic resins are polymers and copolymers of styrene and styrene derivatives, copolymers of vinylidene chloride, polymers and copolymers of methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and other derivatives of acrylic acid, polymers and copolymers of vinyl acetate and vinyl butyral, and various cellulose derivatives including cellulose nitrate or acetate.
