Abstract
1,154,965. Injection moulding. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd., and HUPFIELD BROS. Ltd. 27 Feb., 1968 [10 March, 1967], No. 11314/67. Heading B5A. A molten mass of synthetic thermoplastic material containing a heat decomposable blowing agent is injected into a mould cavity, the temperature of the mass being controlled so that the agent decomposes before or as the mass is injected, and at least a part of the surface of the mould cavity is of a chemically inert microporous material so that gas evolved in the cavity is removed via the porous material. The latter may be plaster of Paris or a sintered microporous metal, e.g. steel, iron, aluminium, copper or bronze. The synthetic thermoplastic material may include polyamides, or ethylene, propylene, styrene, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, butadiene and isoprene. The process may be used) for the production of a shoe sole, which may be moulded directly on to a shoe upper. The porous material of the mould cavity may communicate with atmosphere or not; in the latter case the gas is removed by absorption. The moulded foam material articles have surfaces free from blemishes at those parts which were in contact with the porous material of the cavity.
