Abstract

1,132,353. Moulding foamed polyurethane. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 Feb., 1966 [26 March, 1965], No. 12960/65. Heading B5A. Rigid polyurethane foam is moulded by first heat softening the foam uniformly throughout, using radio-frequency waves (2-3,000,000 megacycles) and then shaping the thus softened foam to the required article. The material may be " over-formed " and allowed to distort to its final shape and the forming operation may be e.g. bending, pressing or embossing. Preferably a laminate comprising a foamed layer self or adhesively-bonded to a plastic layer, e.g. P.V.C., an A.B.S. copolymer, polybutylene, or an halogenated polyolefine, is used. Such a laminate may be made by applying the liquid foaming polyurethane mixture to a release sheet of e.g. thin paper, and permitting the mixture to foam, after which a suitable plastics sheet e.g. an A.B.S. sheet or a P.V.C. fabric is applied and the whole passed through a double belt system to cure the foam.
