Abstract

1,221,293. Cold press-moulding. BRITISH INDUSTRIAL PLASTICS Ltd. 24 Jan., 1968 [6 Feb., 1967; 13 Feb., 1967; 27 Sept., 1967], Nos. 5551/67, 6717/67 and 43970/67. Heading B5A. Articles are cold compression moulded from resin impregnated fibrous material between co-operating male and female dies provided with peripheral resilient pinch-off means. The pinch-off means engages the edges of the fibrous material to restrain it against movement before any significant degree of pressure is applied to the material in the mould and allows a restricted amount of resin to escape. The mould halves may comprise a plastics shell used alone or backed by a foamed resin and may carry resilient supports from which inserts to be incorporated into the moulded article project. In one embodiment, a fibre-polyester or a fibre-epoxy mixture is moulded between fibrepolyester shell moulds 1, 3 the lower of which is provided with a resilient rubber pinch-off ring 4. In a second embodiment like material is moulded between shell moulds 20 and 21, both moulds being provided with rubber pinch-off rings 11, and 10 respectively. Mould 20 carries tubular flexible holders 22 into the central aperture of which are forced inserts 23 for incorporation into the finished article.
