Abstract

942,895. Thermionic valves. ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO. Ltd. Sept. 26, 1961 [March 6, 1961], No. 8058/61. Heading H1D. A hydrogen thyratron switch comprises a cathode 7, an apertured electrode 5, a control electrode 4, an apertured baffle 3 and an anode 1. This switch has a high rate of discharge build-up and a long recovery time, as compared with switches having baffles between cathode and control electrode, and acts more efficiently in a pulse modulator to limit reverse voltages at the end of the main pulse. As shown, electrode 5 and baffle 3 form part of a metallic structure 8 which encloses electrodes 1, 4 and 7. The control electrode 4 comprises a strip of approximately the same size and shape as the aperture in baffle 3. The aperture in disc electrode 5 is dimensioned to permit electrons to be drawn therethrough in sufficient number to give rapid discharge build-up without permitting spurious ionization in the interpulse period.
