A central heating system having several space-heating circuits 13, 14 connected in parallel has a valve 26 by which water from a water heater 2 may be passed to all the circuits or to any selected circuit or circuits, e.g. to those in living rooms in the day and those in bedrooms at night. Water from the heater 2 is also passed to a calorifier 3 for heating water in a tank 8 for supplying water to a branch pipe 12 to taps. The valve 26 and a thermostaticallycontrolled pump 28 (operating when the temperature falls in a boiler return pipe 27) are in a part of the system, including a pipe 15 and a by-pass 31, which is common to all the circuits. Each hot-water circuit contains at least one space-heater 23 while the common pipe 15 includes a hall heater 24 and a bathroom heater 25 but there is no flow through these when the pump 28 is inoperative. The pump 28 and valve 26 may be in a casing, e.g. a casing of the water heater 1.
