Abstract

940,891. Hydraulic apparatus. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. May 13, 1960 [June 3, 1959], No. 17061/60. Heading F1 P. A hydraulic device comprises an operating rod 1 which is in a main cylinder and carries two pistons one 3 actuated by a high pressure fluid for the operative travel of the rod and the other 2 actuated by a low pressure fluid for quickly returning the rod to its initial position. A piston 7 in an auxiliary cylinder 8 is movable rapidly downwards by low pressure fluid, such as compressed air, supplied through a pipe 16, the lower face of the piston engaging the rod 1 which is moved towards a member 5 until fluid displaced from the lower end of the auxiliary cylinder through a pipe 9 to a cylinder 10 urges a piston 11 upwardly against the action of a spring 13 into engagement with an adjustable stop 12. High pressure fluid is then supplied through a pipe 14 to the piston 3 to urge the rod against the member 5. When the high and low supplies are disconnected from the pipes 14, 16, a permanently-connected low pressure fluid supplied through a pipe 15 acts on piston 2 to return the rod to its initial position. In another embodiment, the free piston 7, Fig. 4, is hollow and co-operates with a stop 20 fixed to the auxiliary cylinder which is connected at its lower end to atmosphere by the pipe 9. In a further embodiment, the rapid approach movement is effected by a mechanical device.
