A clamping device for the movable frame of a rolling mill includes a generally cylindrical member 7 which is mounted in a sole-plate 6 and is moved outwardly by a fluid-pressure operated piston 9 to lift, by means of a wedge 12 on the member 7, a cylindrical lifting member 13, so that the frame 2 is supported by rollers 4 and may be easily moved. The member 7 is normally spring urged inwardly so that, due to a coacting inclined face 7a, the frame 2 is held firmly on the sole-plate 6. A single bar may be used in place of two lifting members 13.
