938,864. Photo-sensitive elements with dye developer. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORPORATION. Aug. 21, 1961 [Aug. 22, 1960], No. 30107/61. Class 98 (2). A support bears a silver halide emulsion layer with dye developer available thereto and a reagent adapted to restrain development after a predetermined period of development. Such adaptation may be effected by situating the reagent at the appropriate distance from the developable layer calculated according to its diffusion rate in the media used so that it will arrive at its effective location the predetermined time after the developer. There may be red, green and blue sensitive emulsion layers each with the respective dye developer for cyan, magenta and yellow, and a product with such layer or layers may include a rupturable container holding at least an alkaline processing solution, and also an image-receiving layer for colour or multicolour image production by transfer of unoxidised dye developer after exposure and processing. The development restrainers may be of the class known as antifoggants and their function is to combine at least with exposed silver halide to form less developable complexes after sufficient action by dye developer, and hinder for instance the action of cyan developer on the green sensitive emulsion whilst diffusing towards the imagereceiving layer. Example 1 describes a ten layer element having 5-nitrobenzimidazole in a cyan dye developer layer adjacent to the support and behind the red sensitive emulsion and also in a barrier layer over the red sensitive emulsion. A proportion of this substance is included also in the processing solution, and a positive image therefrom has improved quality as compared with that using a similar negative but which omits the 5-nitrobenzimidazole from the cyan dye layer.
