Abstract

The quality of images developed in silver halide emulsions is improved by treating the emulsion at a stage not later than its development with a small quantity of a 5-mercaptotetrazole. The 5-mercapto-tetrazole may be incorporated in the emulsion, the developer, or in subcoat, supercoat, or backing layers, or may be applied in solution to the emulsion before development. The use of the compound reduces chemical and age fog, increases the maximum obtainable image density, and improves the image colour. The preferred compounds are the 1-aryl-, 1-substituted-aryl-, 1 - aralkyl -, and 1 - cycloalkyl - 5 - mercapto - tetrazoles, although the unsubstituted and 1-alkyl-5-mercapto-tetrazoles may be used. In some cases the compounds increase the effective speed of the emulsion. The 1-hydrocarbon substituent may be methyl, ethyl, higher alkyl groups, allyl, phenyl, naphthyl, benzyl, or cyclohexyl, and such groups may be substituted, e.g. by halogen atoms or amino groups. One part of the compound may be added to from 50,000 to 1,000,000 parts of emulsion or to from 3,000 to 100,000 parts of developer solution. Examples are given of the addition of 1 - phenyl - 5 - mercapto - tetrazole to (a) a gelatino-silver-iodobromide emulsion, (b) a developer, and (c) a gelatine supercoat over a silver chloride emulsion coated on a paper support; of the addition of 1-a -naphthyl-, 1 - p - diethylaminophenyl -, 1 - o - methoxyphenyl-, 1 - p - chlorphenyl -, 1 - benzyl -, 1 - cyclohexyl -, 1 - methyl -, and 1 - ethyl - 5 - mercapto-tetrazoles to a silver iodobromide emulsion, and of the addition of 1-methyl-, 1 - a - naphthyl -, and 1 - cyclohexyl - 5 - mercapto-tetrazoles to developers used for prints later hot-glazed. The 5-mercapto-tetrazoles are prepared by condensing an azide (e.g. sodium azide with an organic isothiocyanate or, in the case of the 1-aryl compounds, by treating an aryl thiosemicarbazide with nitrous acid. 1-Phenyl-5-mercapto-tetrazole is prepared by adding sodium nitrite to a mixture of 4-phenyl-thio-semicarbazide, concentrated hydrochloric acid, and water cooled in ice. 1-Ethyl-, 1-benzyl-, 1-cyclohexyl, 1-a -naphthyl-1, p-chlorphenyl-, 1-p-methoxy-phenyl, and 1-p-diethylaminophenyl-5-mercaptotetrazoles are prepared from the corresponding isothiocyanates.
