Abstract
601,824. Stabilizing photographic lightsensitive emulsions. ELLIOTT & SONS,' Ltd., and HOWE, D. J. T. Oct. 4, 1945, No. 25832. [Class 98 (ii)] A gelatino silver halide emulsion is stabilized by the presence therein or in an adjacent layer, such as the support, substratum, baryta, or overcoating layers, of either a 2-hydroxy- or 2-mercapto-pyrimidine, having' no halogen substituents, but substituted in the 4-position by an alkyl or aryl group and in the 6-position by an alkyl group (e.g. 2-hydroxy- and 2- mercapto-4: 6-dimethylpyrimidine and 2- hydroxy- and 2-mercapto-4-phenyl-6-methylpyrimidine) or a 2-hydroxy- or 2-mercaptoquinazoline substituted in the 4- position by an alkyl or aryl group (e.g. 2-hydroxy-4- phenylquinazoline, 2-mercapto-4-phenylquinazoline, and 2-mercapto-4-methylquinazoline). In examples, comparisons are drawn between the fog values (with and without incubation) on development in a standard metol-hydroquinone developer of (1) a panchromatic silver iodobromide emulsion containing (a) no addition ; (b) 2-hydroxy-4 : 6-dimethylpyrimidine, and (c) 2-hydroxy-4-phenyl-quinazoline; (2) a similar emulsion containing (a) no addition, and (b) 2-mercapto-4 : 6-dimethylpyrimidine sulphate ; (3) a similar emulsion containing (a) no addition, (b) 2-hydroxy-4-methyl-6-phenylpyrimidine, (c) 2-mercapto-4-phenyl-6-methylpyrimidine, (d) 2- mercapto-4-methylquinazoline, and (e) 2-mercapto-4-phenylquinazoline; and (4) slow negative high-contrast emulsion containing (a) the usual coating additions, (b) as (a) with 2- mercapto-4 : 6-dimethylpyrimidine sulphate, and (c) as (a) with twice the quantity of 2- mercapto-4 : 6-dimethylpyrimidine sulphate. In further examples, comparisons are drawn between the gamma values for high-contrast silver bromide emulsion both fresh and stored for varying periods both in the wet and also the coated states and with and without additions of 2-mercapto-4 : dimethylpyrimidine sulphate.
