Abstract
1,106,061. Development of photographic silver halide materials. EASTMAN KODAK CO. March 5, 1965 [March 11, 1964], No. 9395/65. Heading G2C. In the development of multi-layer gelatinosilver halide photographic material with developer solution, over-development of the outermost emulsion layer is prevented by the presence in that layer of between 1 and 10 grams per mole of silver halide of a benzothiazolium salt of the formula: - in which R is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, R 1 is hydrogen, aryl or arylenethiazolyl, D completes a monocyclic or multi-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbon nucleus which may be substituted, X is an acid radical and n is an integer between 1 and 26, except that when R 1 is aryl n is not greater than 3. The salts include those of the formula: - where R, D and X are as above and m is from 1 to 26. The process is particularly useful in the high temperature development of multi-layer colour material which may or may not have incorporated colour couplers. The benzothiazolium salt may be incorporated in the outermost emulsion e. g. the blue-sensitive layer in colour materials, prior to coating, or in an overcoat . layer, or the exposed colour material may be immersed in an aqueous bath containing the benzothiazolium salt prior to development, e. g. a prehardener bath, so that sufficient salt diffuses into the outer emulsion layer. Examples are given including one of a colour material containing benzothiazolium salt in each layer, in amounts decreasing from the outermost layer.
