Abstract

1,155,404. Photographic direct-positive silver halide materials. GEVAERT-AGFA, N.V. May 1, 1967 [May 9, 1966], No.20343/66. Heading G2C. A direct-positive photographic element contains a fogged silver halide emulsion layer containing at least one desensitizing nitrostyryl or nitrobenzylidene dye and a methine dye of the general formula:- wherein each of R 1 and R 2 is an unsaturated aliphatic group, aryl which may be substituted, cycloalkyl or alkyl which may be substituted, Ph is phenyl which may be substituted, Z completes a fused benzene or substituted benzene nucleus, Y completes a heterocyclic nucleus and X<SP>-</SP> is an anion, X<SP>-</SP> being absent when R 1 contains an anionic group. The dyes may be added to the fogged emulsion as a solution in methanol or ethanol. The emulsion may have been fogged by light or chemically by addition of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide during precipitation of the silver halide and the first ripening, or by adding a reducing agent such as hydrazine, hydroxylamine, formaldehyde or stannous chloride. The emulsion may contain gold, platinum, palladium, iridium or ruthenium compounds. The element is exposed imagewise to white or blue light and developed to give a direct positive image.
