Abstract

1,020,920. Photographic silver halide emulsions. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Oct. 26, 1962 [Oct. 26,1961], No. 40929/65. Divided out of 1,018,755. Heading G2C. The sensitivity of a silver halide emulsion which has been sensitized with a compound of the formula:- where R is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl and M is hydrogen or a water-soluble cation, is increased by incorporation in the emulsion of methane sulphinic acid, methane disulphinic acid, ethane sulphinic acid, benzene sulphinic acid, p-chlorobenzene sulphinic acid, p-toluene sulphinic acid, p-anisol sulphinic acid, p-acetanilide sulphinic acid, salicylic- 5-sulphinic acid, #-naphthalene sulphinic acid, cyclohexane sulphinic acid, thiophene-2-sulphinic acid or water-soluble salts thereof. Other sensitizers such as gold, ruthenium, palladium, iridium or platinum salts e.g. potassium chloroaurite, chloroaurate or aurithiocyanate or auric trichloride, colour couplers, hardeners, antifoggants and tone-modifiers may be present. The emulsion vehicle may be gelatin, polyvinyl alcohol, collagen or albumin. In Examples, gelatine silver halide emulsions are sensitized with (1) ammonium N- butyldithlocarbamate and sodium p-toluenesulphinate; (2) a gold sensitizer, ammonium N-ethyldithiocarbamate and sodium p-toluene sulphinate; and (3) ammonium N-ethyldithiocarbamate and each of sodium p-toluenesulphinate, sodium benzene sulphinate and neutralised p-acetamidobenzene sulphinic acid. The above emulsions are compared with similar emulsions in which the sulphinate salts are absent.
