Abstract
1283234 Photographic direct-positive silver halide emulsions EASTMAN KODAK CO 13 Nov 1969 [15 Nov 1968] 55640/69 Heading G2C A direct-positive photographic silver halide emulsion is spectrally sensitized with a sensitizing methine or azacyanine dye (i.e. a dye which causes less than 80% loss in blue speed when added to a negative-type developing out gelatine silver chlorobromide emulsion containing 40 mole per cent chloride and 60 mole per cent bromide, at a concentration of 0À01-0À2 g dye per mole of silver halide, when the emulsion is exposed and developed for 3 minutes in (Registered Trade Mark) "Kodak" developer D-19 (composition given) at 20 C.) and a bipyridinium salt comprising two pyridinium nuclei joined by a linkage attached to a carbon atom of each nucleus. The methine dye may be a cyanine, merocyanine or hemicyanine dye. The bipyridinium salt preferably has one of the formulae:- wherein R 1 and R 2 are each alkyl, substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl; R 3 and R 4 are each H, or halogen, or an alkyl or alkoxy group having 1-4C; R 5 and R 6 are each H or 1-4C alkyl; R is vinylene or ethylene; X<SP>-</SP> is an anion; n is O or 1; and m is 2, 3 or 4. Many examples of sensitizing dyes are listed. The silver halide may be fogged with both a reduction fogging agent and a gold fogging agent, and the emulsion may contain a colour coupler. The bipyridinium salts are electron acceptors and with the dyes produce, by appropriate selections, many direct-positive emulsions having spectral sensitivity tailored to requirement.
