Abstract

1439638 Infrared sensitized photographic silver halide emulsion EASTMAN KODAK CO 2 Oct 1973 [2 Oct 1972] 46047/73 Heading G2C A photographic silver halide emulsion having a pAg of 6À0 to 8À5 contains at least an infrared spectral sensitizing dye which has a cathodic polarographic halfwave potential more positive than -1À20 volts, the dye being present in an amount which results in at least 0À3 log E desensitization of a portion of the same emulsion (when coated on a support, sensitometrically exposed to light to which the silver halide emulsion is intrinsically sensitive and developed for 6 minutes at 20‹C in Kodak (R.T.M.) D-19 developer) and a silver complexing azaindene in an amount which will reduce the desensitization caused by the dye. These dyes may be used at 50 to 1000mg per mole of silver halide. The dye may have one of the Formulae: where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are each alkyl, substituted alkyl or aryl or R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> together with the N atom to which they are attached form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring, Z<SP>1</SP> and Z<SP>2</SP> each complete a heterocyclic nucleus containing 5 or 6 atoms in the ring containing the N atom shown; Q is an ethylene group which may be substituted; each L is optionally substituted methine; n and p are each 0 or 1; m is 1-5, q is 1 or 2, and X# is an anion e.g. 3, 3' -diethylselenadicarbocyanine iodide. The azaindene may be a triazaindene, tetraazaindene or pentaazaindene. Sensitizing dye combinations are used in Examples 1, 3 and 4. Bis-(vinylsulphonyl-methyl) ether is used as a hardener in Example 1. The emulsions have higher speeds in the spectrally sensitized region and are sensitive to longer wavelengths than similar emulsions having lower dye concentrations.
