938,667. Mass spectrometers. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. March 9, 1961 [March 9, 1960], No. 8749/61. Class 39 (1). The R.F. mass spectrometer of Specification 773,689 has a readily dismountable envelope consisting of middle and two end parts 15, 18, 13 of glass and intermediate parts 14- 16 and 17 of metal. Glass end part 13 carries the ion source 11 and glass end part 18 the ion collector 20. The analyser rods 21 are mounted at both ends in mica rings 22 which are carried by rings 23, 24. Ring 23 is embraced by a box-shaped metal part 23A which carries a diaphragm structure 25 and is secured by curved metallic part 26 to the flanges of envelope parts 14, 16. Ring 24 is also embraced by a box-shaped part which carries a diaphragm 31 and a spring sleeve 27, the sleeve 27 being held in an end portion of envelope part 17. The ion source 11 may be of the electron impact type described in Specification 928,168. The glass parts of the envelope are lined, internally or externally, with a conductive coating or a metal net or gauze to prevent charging and to screen off the R.F. field. The analyser rods may be mounted on rods fused vacuum-tight in the glass wall and which, at the same time, serve as supply leads.
