Abstract

937,736. Rotary brushes. OSBORN MANUFACTURING CO. April 3, 1962 [May 3, 1961], No. 12814/62. Class 19. In the manufacture of a rotary wire brush having twisted bristle tufts, the tufts are spaced circumferentially by projections on one side only of a ring 6 passing through the bights of the tufts. Side plates 3, 4 are clamped together to compress the tufts and are spotwelded in this position. In order to prevent the bights from slanting across the plane of the ring 6 (which slanting would normally be increased by compression of the tufts), the plates 3, 4 have tuft engaging teeth 25, 26 which, on counter-rotation thereof, twist the tufts, so that the maximum width of the bight is presented to the clamping action. The bight is thus pinched into a narrower form and the tuft head is thereby splayed out. The brush may be adapted to different arbor sizes by means of annular plates 20, 21 which rotate in opposite directions to be locked into, or unlocked from, the side plates.
