To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY NrnLsoN,` citi- Zen of the United States, resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State. of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Imrovement in Rotary Brushes, of which the following is a specification, the princi le of the .invention being herein explains and the best modein which I have contemplated ap lying that principle, so as to distinguish it rom other inventions.
My invention relates to rotary brushes and particularly to a device of that character in which the brush comprises a series of bristle sections clamped by suitable means into a unitary brush structure.
Said invention consists of means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following descri tion set forth in detail certain means embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
' In said annexed drawing: Figures 1 and 2 represent inside elevation of the two complementary clamp members forming an element of my improved rotary brush; Fig. 3 represents an elevation of a bristle section upon which is clamped the binding element shown in Figs. 1 and 2, one member of said element being shown in broken elevation Fig. 4 represents a broken perspective of said element in assembled condition, the bristle section to be retained between the two members of the same not b eing shown; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a brush embodying a modified form of my improved construction; Fig. 6 shows, 'detached from such modified form of brush, one of the clamp members corresponding' to those represented in Figs. l and 2; Fig. 7 is a similar view of the complementary clampmember; Fig. 8 is a section of the latter taken on line 8 8, Fig. 7; while Fig. 9 is an end elevation of a clamping hub element characterizing still another modiiication of the invention.
My improved rotary brush is a unitary structure built up of any desired or suitable number of similar parts or sections, of which section A, Fig. 3, is a type. Each of said sections A comprises an annular bristle section a and a pair of complementary clamping members a a2 bound together in the form rst to beconsidered by means of interlocking lugs or tongues a3 and a5 respectively. Said annular bristle section a is -of well known'construction comprising a plurality of interlocked metallic nbers (L12 arranged radially, theinner ends of which are securely locked between adouble twisted Wire strand als. The clamping members. a and a2 are of aA diameter somewhat larger than the inner diameter of the bristle section a and are. provided upon htheir inner or comsions a7 as, respectively, forming a seat a9 adapted to receive the twisted wire strand a13 of the bristle section c and the inner ends of the bristle iibers bound thereby, when `said clamping members are interlocked with la bristle section a retained between them.
The clamping members a a? are substantially flat plates stamped out of suitable material, and, is as plainly shown in Figs. .1 and y.2, both may be made by one die, since .they are similar in all res ects. The tongues a a5 are made by partial y severing ortions of the members a a2, respectively, rom the plate bodies and forming the portions thus severed into locking' tongues, this being acshown in the drawing by bending said portions inwardly so as to incline ina general tangential direction with respect to the surface of said plate, whereby they are adapted to interlock, as plainly shown in Fig. 4, when the members a a2 of the binding element are assembl This formation of the locking tongues 1s designed to be accom lished without removin any of the materialof the mem.- bers a a2, a though it is often more practicable and, therefore, preferable to stamp out or otherwise remove portions of the material to form slits or narrow slots a4 aff, and then form the tongue-portions a3- a-bounded by these slits into interlocking members. This is the form of construction thatvI have illusvtrated inthe first four figures of the drawings. Said slits may be of any desired form or shape, and either curved or angular, their purpose beingto facilitate the formation of the tongues .a3 a5 andthe vinterlocking of the same.
From the foregoing description it will be readily apparent that a bristle section a may be laid upon one of the clamping members, a', for instance, and then the. other clamping member a2 laid upon the bristle section with plementary faces with grooves or deprescomplished in the form of construction l its tongues a5 and slits a,-' in proper relative position- With the tongues a3 and slits al* of member a whence the tongues may be interlocked in any suitable manner.
