CURTIS, 01 LAKEWOOD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE OSBORN MANUFAGTUE ING COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO ROTARY BRUSH Application filed February 2, 1928. Serial No. 251,825.
15 the various forms in which the principle of the invention ma be employed.
In said annxe drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of the invention; Fi 2 is a section taken as %III, Fig.'1;,and Figs. 3 and 4 are detailsections taken as indicated by the lines III-III and IV-IV, Fig. 1.
The brush tufts 1, preferably set in a twist, are strung on a wire holder 2. In the detail 25 form shown, the ends of the wire holder are brought together and secured as a ring, inany suitable way, for example by welding. Lateral plates are provided and such plates may take the form of side plates 3 and 4,the one es 5 and the other with corresponding opemngs or slots 6. These plates are assembled with the wire in such a position that the tongues lie just outside of the wire and also enter between groups of the tufts 1, and are secured in final posi tion by clinching down the ends of the tongues projecting throughthe slots on the far side. With the ends of the tongues thus clinched down, the entire assemblage is secure.
4 around the wire holder; and the assembled plates provide means for applying the brush to a driving arbor. With such a compact construction, thrusts in the particular directions imposed in operation are provided for and theconstruction as a whole affords a secure and reliable arrangement of brush elements such as to be well adapted for severe usage under high speed operation.
Other modes of applying the principle of the invention may be employed, change bemg made as regards the details disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims, or'the equivalent of such, be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
1. a A rotary brush comprising in combination a central ring composed of two mating annuli each having a channel about its inner periphery, a plane annular surface immediately beyond said channel and a second plane annular surface beyond said firstnamed annular surfaces and offset therefrom a distance equal to the depth of said channels, one of said second-named surfaces having vtongues radiallydisposed in the direction of their width and the other said surface having radial slots corresponding thereto, said tongues being of suflicient length to pass through said slots and be bent over at their ends, said two last-named plane surfaces defining between them a. channel peripherally open, a circumferential wire in said channel inward of said tongues, a plurality of radially disposed tufts of bristles seated in said channel, said bristle tufts being bent upon themselves over said wire.
2. A rotary brush comprising in combination a central ring composed of two mating annuli each having a channel about its inner periphery, aplane annular surface immedlately beyond said channel and a second plane annular surface beyond said firstnamed annular surface and offset therefrom 'a'distance equal to the depth of said channel,
one of said second-named surfaces having tongues radially disposed in the direction of their width and the other said surface having radial slots corrfisiponding thereto, said tongues being of s cient length to pass through said slots and be bent over at their ends, said two last-named plane surfaces defining between them a channel'peripherally open, a circumferential wire in said channel =inward of said tongues, a lurality of radially disposed tufts of brlstles seated in said channel, said bristle tufts being bent upon themselves over said wire and twisted, said tongues laterally supporting said tufts 15 at the base.
Signed by me this 30th day of January,
' EDWARD E. CURTIS.
