Abstract
936,142. Oil-break switches; switch contacts. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 21, 1959 [Dec. 30, 1958], No. 42020/58. Class 38 (5). A moving blade 11 which may be that of the oil switch of Specification 936,141 has contact fingers 11a joined by springs 11c which maintain pressure between the tips 11b and a fixed contact 10a<SP>1</SP> for normal currents, the length of fingers 11a being such that the electromagnetic interaction between the currents in fingers 11a exceeds the opposing action between the currents in members 10a<SP>1</SP>, 11a, thus increasing the contact pressure during fault conditions. The separating action between members 10a<SP>1</SP>, 11a is reduced by using a plurality of contact fingers and similar action between the blade 11 and a fixed conductor 12 at the blade hinge 13 is prevented by providing the latter with a spring contact-closing force. When the blade 11 is opened a limit spacer (not shown) maintains the fingers 11a apart. The fingers may be made of different material to unbalance their currents and alter the electromagnetic force between them.
